We weren’t allowed to celebrate Halloween growing up. My fellow preacher’s/ church kids understand what I mean when I say we had “Hallelujah Nights” instead.

It’s timmmmmmmme! (Yes, Mariah Carey voice, you know the one). But no, it’s not Christmas — it’s a few days before Halloween! If you’re like me, you want your costume to look like you tried.

Whatever it was I still felt the dark discomfort clawing its way through my veins and burrowing into my brain matter too. In the bathroom, I wash my palm and do my best to clean the wound. The porcelain sink cradles the blood as if it’s hesitant to let it drain out.
I sat up so fast I made myself dizzy and shook Dre up. I watched his face shift from grogginess to concern as he registered the twisted moaning sounds and the source, Omah’s room.
We made our way to the door glad that Lai had her own room. Except upon closer inspection, the sound was actually coming from Lai’s room.
