Motherhood: The Whole Story
I pray today you find yourself in a safe space that you can rest in your existence without a worry in the world. Even if it’s just for today!
Today, on this beautiful Sunday on the 11th day of May in the year of 2025, Blackstack is celebrating Black mothers. Holding space for those who are grieving their mother, celebrating those who are new mothers, and cherishing those who are learning to put the motherhood cape down sometimes to love on yourself.
Today, we give Black mothers their flowers. From two Black mothers to almost six thousand Black cousins who are mothers or “came from a woman, got their name from a woman” in the words of Tupac.
Motherhood is no yellow brick road. And many mothers will tell you the road is congested with expectations from strangers who probably wouldn’t last a second in our shoes. Black woman raised America, and all of the countries that make up this world.
We are the blueprint.
Black motherhood is nurturing to the soul.
Black motherhood is the feeling when you are hugged and the weight on your shoulders fall by your side at rest.
Black motherhood can take the pain away with just one kiss.
Black motherhood is sacred and cannot be duplicated.
Black motherhood is within our DNA whether we become mothers to children or our dreams. We are the creators of life, in all its forms.
Let’s imagine this image is a photo of the little versions of
and myself excited to tell you that we have something special just for YOU! Just a girl, looking at her Mommy as a superhero without the cape. This is the version of us that this curation required us to tap into. Graeme took on the hard work by taking submissions, communicating to all forty-four of y’all that submitted, and curated the digital magazine! All while encouraging her community of moms to start dreaming again. As for me, although I am a mother of the most precious little girl on this planet - deep down this little girl version of me wants to go back to the days of making a “Happy Mother’s Day” card for my mom with macaroni elbow noodles. The days when I was blind to the conditional love I grew older to accept as normal.
However, I take this moment as an opportunity to say good job to us. The Black women that decided to raise their children differently so they will not have to heal from the things we are healing from. To the Black mothers that choose to give their children a voice, and will stand ten toes down when our child is not comfortable hugging people just because they are family.
Good job for breaking the cycles! Even if you decided not to birth children into this world right now, that’s one hell of a decision so now you get to be everyone’s Aunties and Uncles!
Here is the digital magazine you have all been waiting for!
Editor’s Note: A special thank you and Happy Mother’s Day to
for being this idea to me and taking full leadership on the project from start to finish. I love collaborations that allow others to have the spotlight! Check out Graeme’s community for mothers, as a member I highly recommend 10/10.
To my fellow mothers in the field, girl I see you, and I love you! Rest up today mama, even if it’s long enough to enjoy this magazine.
Wonderful to wake up on Mother's Day and see so many of y'all enjoying this! The writers did such an amazing job. I can't thank everyone enough for trusting me to pull this together.
Honored to be a part of something so tender & special💐 Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mutha’s out there♥️
