Music is uniquely woven into the texture of our culture, holding the memory of our lived experience. Ad-libs hold those happy, more positive memories that flow freely through our minds when activated.
I love how deeply specific this was! I’ve never thought much about the texture ad libs add to a song (and contribute to the nostalgia I then have for the song). Love love the regional deep dives too
Listen, this is all Nick. When he brought the idea and rough draft to me I was blown away! I’m so glad you found appreciate in it also! This is hands down one of my favorite music pieces published through Blackstack!
Thanks for reading! Honestly as someone who knows gogo really well it would have been a dishonor to gogo to squeeze it in like that. We both know gogo needs its OWN piece it’s so much more to the ad-libs in gogo music than studio recorded songs. I went to NC A&T and I remember the bands coming on campus…that’s an experience you can’t just write a paragraph about! I’d love to curate your words on the sounds of gogo 👀
Thank you for reading! No lie, I'm not super hip to the gogo scene in DC, I'd love to hear more about it. I see Jacquie already requested a piece from ya! lol
Ha! Yes, she did indeed, Nick. I really considered it, but nah, although I have big love for go-go, Ima pass on the piece. If you’re really interested in learning about it, you can actually pull it up on YouTube. There are a number of videos, shorts and documentaries on the History of GoGo music. Check it out!
Omg Lonely x Speaker Knockers adlibs take me back to freshman year of high school when I would rap the adlibs like a hypeman, either by myself or with friends.

Thank you for reading!
Now I am nodding and wondering how this works with life and writing too.
Great point Rhea. I'm sure there's something. There's something about the little things that go so far with us throughout life. Thanks for reading!
