I think the lack of manners is connected to the lack of principles that people are taught. There is a population of people who were not taught as kids that actions have consequences and impact other people. So many live in a bubble of isolation that they cannot comprehend how their mentality and behaviors towards others creates consequences for themselves. Believing others are not worthy of the love,care and respect one feels entitled to creates a culture of hostility and cruelty.
This! I have been blown away by how cold and callous people can be in emotionally tough situations. Putting their ego before supporting a fellow human in a dark time. Its happened so many times to me.
OMG, I just had this conversation with my bestie yesterday! For the record, I'm in my 50s. I was getting gas when a youngish (30 sumthin) Black man pulled in and purposely turned up the most misogynistic, profanity-laced rap song! 1. Um, that's your favorite song not mine. 2. It was so bad it had me death clutching faux pearls & real gas pumps!
IMO, it's rap music. There, I said it! These lyrics are degrading & so disrespectful to women. And yet, we ALL simply turn the other bootie cheek & dance to the helluva beats.
Music is a powerful medium. We got lost in the groove…and dare I say, we've lost the narrative.
I think the breakdown occurred with my generation (xillenial) I noticed with family, cousins my age let their kids talk to us any kind of way. As a kid I could never treat aunties, uncles, elders this way. Never would have survived childhood.
Finally someone said it! Growing up as a millennial I've noticed how the little things with interpersonal interactions has withered away. & because of the lack of empathy people have become horrible people. No morals, values, or ethics. Just sense of self. I knew I wasn't tripping!
Maybe etiquette and manners stopped being taught when the interactions with people diminished? Most younger generations meet others on the internet which possibly left no room for manners to be translated in real life. Will I be teaching my kids manners? Absolutely. But I’m a millennial that grew up with these set of rules and have also have accepted that it’s a lost art.
