This week's "Black Recipes" is brought to you by the village, because it takes a village. Nikki blessed us with a family recipe that it got me to thinking, and I got to writing too.
I love to bake. Bread cookies and cakes, specifically. My mother does not. So when my grandmother passed (she raised me), the recipes were tossed aside.
So I’m starting to rewrite and recreate from memory. I need a dedicated place to put them all instead spread out in various journals.
Thank you, Nikki, for sharing your family’s recipe. 🖤
Ooo! I’m still trying to decide what kind of container I want. Whether a binder or dedicated notebook, which I would turn into a grimoire to be passed down.
Yes! That’s what I was thinking. I can scribble in a plain notebook and take my time transferring and putting together a grimoire. Now I’m on the hunt for a leather bound book lol
I would like to echo Lakeisha’s sentiments. Tremendous gratitude, Nikki, for sharing ya family’s recipe; I’m finna ask my moms if she made these when I was a kid because this whole piece is jogging my memory. I ain’t thought about molasses since childhood but now that I am, I’m intrigued.
I just typed this essay of a response but my finger accidentally swiped and so it got deleted. 😭 I feel depleted. I don’t want to retype all of that. I wish Substack had audio messages and I’d send it to you instead of having to retype. Just know my moms did not make molasses cookies growing up, but she did make cinnamon muffins and the crown of the muffins resembled these cookies and so my brain thought I had experienced this recipe that you shared, but I didn’t. My mother also used a brand of molasses called “Grandma’s Molasses” for some of her pastries, which also made me think my grandmother(rest her soul) had made molasses cookies, but that was another example of my brain attempting to make connections that didn’t exist 😅 point is, this was a very cool read and I appreciate you sharing this. Even if it was only a falsehood of my imagination, I felt so connected to you and your people in that moment. What a moment that was… Bless you & yours 🙏🏾

I just got a recipe binder as a gift and it has been so convenient! Good luck with rewriting your rememory 😉
